How to convert PDF to PNG
- Tap Choose PDF files and select your PDF, or drag the file in from your desktop.
- Set the format to PNG and pick a resolution: 150, 300 or 600 DPI, or any custom value from 72 to 1200 DPI.
- Choose the pages. Keep all of them, tick only the ones you need, or type a range such as 2-4, 9.
- Save. A single page downloads as one PNG; several pages come together in one ZIP, numbered in page order.
There is no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit, so you can run the same PDF again with a different resolution as often as you like.
PDF to PNG or PDF to JPG: which one fits your file?
Both formats show the same page. What differs is how the pixels are stored when the file is saved.
| What matters | PNG | JPG |
|---|---|---|
| Compression | Lossless: every pixel is stored exactly | Lossy: some fine detail is traded for a smaller file |
| File size | Larger, especially for photos | Smaller |
| Text and thin lines | Edges stay clean at any zoom | Faint smudges can appear around letters at lower quality |
| Good for | Documents, diagrams, screenshots, images you will edit | Photos, sharing, forms with a size limit |
If the PDF is mostly text, tables or drawings, PNG gives the cleanest result. If it is full of photos, or the image has to be small, JPG is the better trade, and the PDF to JPG converter handles that case.
High-resolution PNG files from any PDF
A PNG keeps every pixel it is given, so sharpness comes down to how many pixels you ask for. That is what the DPI setting controls: page width in inches multiplied by DPI gives the image width in pixels.
- 150 DPI: an A4 page comes out at about 1240 × 1754 px. Plenty for screens, slides and chat.
- 300 DPI: about 2480 × 3508 px for A4, and exactly 2550 × 3300 px for US Letter. Right for printing and close zooming.
- 600 DPI: about 4961 × 7016 px for A4. For small print, maps, floor plans and detailed artwork.
- Custom, 72 to 1200 DPI: any value in between, or more detail still.
Because nothing is thrown away, PNG files grow quickly as the DPI rises. Choose the lowest setting that still looks right for the job.
The DPI is recorded inside each PNG, so print and layout apps open the image at the page's real size. When a page is more than your browser can hold at that DPI, it is rendered at the highest DPI that fits, and a note tells you.
Convert PDF to PNG on iPhone, Android or a computer
Nothing needs installing, because the converter runs in the browser you already have. In Safari on an iPhone or iPad, Choose PDF files opens the Files app, so you can pick a PDF you saved from Mail or downloaded earlier. The finished PNGs, or a ZIP of them, show up in the Downloads folder of that same app.
On Android, look in Downloads. On a Mac or a Windows PC, check wherever your browser saves files.
Big PDFs and high DPI values need a lot of memory, and phones have less of it. If a page comes out at a reduced resolution, or a large file refuses to open, drop the DPI and try again.
Your PDF stays on your device
Converting PDF to PNG here involves no server. The page's own code, built on Mozilla's pdf.js and served from this domain, opens the file and draws each page on your device. The site has no upload endpoint at all.
Password-protected PDFs work too. Type the password on the page; it is used to open the file in your browser and is not sent anywhere. A wrong password is reported, and you can try again.
More ways to save the pages
- Grayscale: drop the color, which suits text documents and forms.
- One long image: stack the selected pages top to bottom in a single picture, centred on the widest page.
- Mixed page sizes: each page keeps its own size and the rotation stored in the PDF.
- Whole documents: every selected page is saved, and the ZIP keeps them in page order with zero-padded numbers.
To go back the other way, JPG to PDF combines PNG and JPG images into one PDF. If you want the words rather than pictures of them, convert the PDF to Markdown instead.
PDF to PNG questions
Quick answers before you convert your first file.
Can I convert a PDF file to a PNG image?
Yes. Add the PDF, choose PNG as the format and save: every page you select becomes its own PNG file, and several pages come as one ZIP.
How can I convert a PDF file to PNG for free?
Use this page. There is no fee, no account, no watermark and no daily limit, and the work happens in your browser, so your device's memory is the only practical limit.
Is it better to convert PDF to JPG or PNG?
PNG is better for text, charts and drawings because it keeps every pixel. JPG is better for photos and for files that must stay small; for those, use the PDF to JPG converter.
How can I convert a PDF to PNG on my iPhone?
In Safari, tap Choose PDF files, select the PDF in the Files app and set the format to PNG. The images appear in the Downloads folder in Files, where a ZIP unpacks with a tap.
Does converting PDF to PNG lose quality?
PNG compression is lossless, so nothing is lost when the image is saved. Sharpness depends on the resolution: at 300 DPI or higher, text and lines stay clean when you zoom in.
What resolution should I use for PDF to PNG?
300 DPI suits most documents and prints well. Use 150 DPI for screens and smaller files, 600 DPI for fine detail, or a custom value up to 1200 DPI.
Can I convert a password-protected PDF to PNG?
Yes, if you know the password. Type it on the page; your browser opens the PDF with it, and the password stays on your device.
